Of the many award shows that are held at the beginning of each new year, the Oscars are probably the most anticipated events of them all. This year I was impressed, as usual, with all the gorgeous fashion choices displayed on the red carpet and decided to share with you a few of my favorite looks!
However I was even more impressed this year by the amount of focus that was spent addressing various social issues and illnesses as well. Of the many people who came up and accepted an award, several chose to spend their brief time on stage to bring light to important topics. Things like racial and gender discrimination and suicide were addressed, and awareness and support was raised for diseases such as ALS and Alzheimer’s.
It’s quite a remarkable thing to have these issues discussed in a room filled with some of the most influential, powerful, and wealthy people in society. Films can provide such a powerful medium for the discussion of topics that people might otherwise feel are too stigmatized to mention. And by evoking thoughts and feelings and emotions in us that allow us to feel and relate to the characters on screen they can help us better understand the experiences of others that struggle with some of the above mentioned issues, like suicide and discrimination and even ALS. So tonight, amidst all the glitz and glamour, seeing all the people who chose to utilize their power of influence to encourage change and challenge us to see a new perspective about the world we live in was quite inspiring.
What did you think of the 2015 Oscars?
