Random Acts of Kindness

Random Acts of Kindness

What do a small flower and a Starbucks frappuccino have in common? On the surface: nothing. But in fact both were given to me by complete strangers on completely random days for no good reason than the other person apparently felt like doing something nice for someone else that day. And it totally worked.

The sunflower I received in the middle of a busy courtyard, by a young man with a handful of bright yellow blooms that he was handing out to everyone that passed, along with the message “I just want you to know you look beautiful today!” And in my t-shirt and jeans with my hair in a bun I certainly hadn’t felt beautiful that day up until that moment when a stranger chose to spend a few minutes of his time to make someone else’s day a little brighter.

The frappuccino was a similar occurrence. I had gone in briefly with a friend on a Saturday morning yet when I got to the counter my card wouldn’t swipe. Turns out I deactivated it by setting it next to one of my other cards but since Starbucks doesn’t exactly take an “IOU” and I wasn’t carrying cash with me, I had no choice but to just ditch the drink and leave quickly before I embarrassed myself any further in front of the long line of caffeine addicts waiting impatiently on me to get my act together. However as I was walking out the door I heard the cashier call my name to come back in as the gentleman behind me had kindly offered to pay for my drink just for the simple reason that “It happens to the best of us”.

I tell you these stories so that hopefully some of you will also feel inspired to help others this week. I think we forget the impact that we can have on someone’s entire day with just a simple random act of kindness. It doesn’t have to be a grand or extravagant gesture; it can be as simple as leaving extra change in the vending machine, smiling at people you pass on the street, or offering to help a stranger carry groceries to their car. So I challenge everyone for this week’s motivation to look for opportunities to serve at least one other person with a random act of kindness, and without expecting anything in return (except maybe that warm fuzzy feeling you get after doing something good).

If you’ve done a random act of kindness this week please share it in the comments below! Or if someone has ever done a random act of kindness for you, share that too 🙂 Happy Monday everyone!
